2020 is a collaborative documentary that tells the unheard stories of the Somali Girls Group, an underrepresented minority in Bristol. Somali’s are the third largest population in Bristol, Somali culture makes a major, but wildly underestimated contribution to Bristolian life but as a community they are hugely underrepresented. These girls do not see themselves in the media and therefore don’t believe their voices are heard. This film focuses on the difficulties of being a young black muslim woman in today’s society, on British/ Somali identity and cultural difference, on racism, the experience of Covid-19 and how they are growing up with the vigour to change their personal representation. These are powerful messages from young, brave women who pride themselves on their heritage.
